Tattoo removal is performed with a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at 1064 and 532 nm, using ultra-short pulses at very high peak power. The beam reflects strongly off pigment and skin, so scattered pulses are dangerous as well as direct ones. Tattoo-removal eyewear is designed for this mode and is mandatory for the operator, the client and anyone else present during the treatment.
The key requirement is coverage of both wavelengths, 1064 and 532 nm, at once. Eyewear rated only for 1064 nm gives no protection in the green mode used on red and orange pigment. Optical density should be OD 5+ at both wavelengths; for powerful Q-switched and picosecond devices OD 6+ is safer. Check the side protection as well: a pulse reflected off pigment travels at an arbitrary angle.
